When I travel—whether for personal or business reasons—I far and away prefer to stay in an Airbnb. Why? Let me explain.
Staying in an Airbnb is usually cheaper than a hotel. Check out this study from Busbud that compares Airbnbs to hotels in major cities around the world.
2. More space and amenities
For the same price as a hotel room, you can nearly always find an entire apartment (with a kitchen!). It's a no brainer!
3. More creative and inspiring spaces
I have stayed in some GORGEOUS Airbnb locations. When you're a creative working long hours, the space you're in can really help propel you through a late-night design session and stoke your creativity to spin out your best work!
4. Bigger tables and desks
This is important for business travelers who have computers, cameras, hard drives, etc. Whether you're working solo or with a group of people, having more space to spread out is always nice to have.
5. Better (and free) wifi
Wifi is always free in Airbnbs, and it usually works better than hotel wifi. Trust me. I've stayed in tons of hotels and tons of Airbnbs, and while I've experienced good and bad wifi in both locations, Airbnb has been much more likely to have a strong signal.
6. The feeling of home...away from home
Hotels will never feel like home, no matter how nice they are. Idk if it’s the smells, the small rooms or the pristineness but after staying in Airbnbs, hotels feel cold and isolated to me. Staying in an Airbnb gives you the feeling of community and authenticity.
7. Oh, the snacks...
Most Airbnbs have snacks and drinks for free (great late-night fuel that you'll pay $5 each for in a hotel fridge).
8. Friendlier communication with your hosts
Airbnb hosts usually communicate via text or email, which is very quick, convenient and exactly what millennials (like me!) want. Most hosts are very responsive and will go out of their way to make sure you have a great experience in their Airbnb (gotta keep those ratings up!).
9. Meeting new people
Most hosts, if you meet them, are super nice and friendly ... you may even become friends!
10. Experiencing the city like a local
Staying in a real home/apartment gives you the feeling of experiencing the city on a deeper level, like a local, vs if you stay in a hotel chain that looks the same in Ohio and California.
11. Decorating ideas!
I always try to stay in places that inspire me for home decor. Our house is industrial loft style (check out @the1890brickyhouse) so oftentimes I’m trying to find something similar that will inspire us later.
12. Live someone else's life for a day
Any time you can see life from another person's point of view, it opens up new ways of thinking and problem solving (which for a creative is really fun and stimulates our brain!).
And so you don't think it's just me, check out these stats from recent articles:
The number of business travelers using Airbnb is on the rise. 1 in 3 business travelers use Airbnb or other private accommodations, compared to 1 in 10 just a few years ago (New York Times).
More than 250,000 companies travel with Airbnb, compared to just 250 two years ago (Forbes).
70% of millennial business travelers prefer to stay in shared accommodations like Airbnb (Conde Nast).
