This week was Cincinnati Design Week 2017, presented by AIGA Cincinnati (a kickass national organization I became involved with as a graphic design student). Cincinnati Design Week is a week-long celebration of creativity, featuring 15 events in 5 days. I couldn't go to all of them :( but I hit as many as I could. They never disappoint!
Make With Meaning
The first event I attended was my friend Michelle Sucher's talk on designing for good. As the description for the event says, "A lot of us get into design to make things: furniture, packages, labels. If it's sold in a store, we want to make it better and more beautiful. What if we applied that same mentality to make our city better?"
I might be biased, but this was probably my favorite event of the week. It combined two of my greatest passions—design and community outreach. Michelle, a social innovation specialist at nonprofit Design Impact, did a great job preparing her content and delivering it with funny gifs and a laidback, approachable vibe. I also loved the long Q&A at the end, which allowed the audience to ask tons of questions and really engage with the topic.
Disruptive: An Inside Look at Cannes Lions 2017
In this presentation (complete with a yummy lunch!), Jesse Zettler (my mentor from co-op days!!) from Landor shared some AMAZING, award-winning design work and trends from the Cannes Design and Advertising Lions 2017. My favorite tidbit was about how brands need to loosen up on their brandguides a bit if they want to stay current and fresh. The market landscape turns so fast now that if you want to grab attention, you've got to find ways to break your own rules in a way that makes sense for your brand. Amen! I've been saying this forevs!!
The audience felt a little uptight at this one but maybe they were intimidated by it being at the Landor offices, since they're the most well-known design firm in the area, loosen up guys! I really get inspired by seeing other great design thou, so this was a rejuvenating treat for me and it was great to see some of my freelance "co-workers"! 👋🏻
De-Stress to Impress: Wellness Strategies for Sustaining Creativity
Mid-week (perfectly timed!), this session was all about how to manage our health to sustain creativity and take care of ourselves in our busy careers. After lunch from Whole Bowl (soooo YUM!), we drank infused water and learned some wellness tips and tools from the crack-me-up Jessica Stoddard (AIGA).
Then Leslie from Modo Yoga shared some practical office yoga exercises that I jotted down as soon as the class was over, so I could use them again, haha. One I particularly liked was the Ujjayi breath! We left with tons of great info on wellness techniques we can actually put to good use and I got to see some of my fave Hyperquake and LPK buddies there! 💆🏻
Handzy: Handmade Card Workshop
I signed up for this event, but didn't get to go (ended up presenting some of my work to Gorilla Glue owners instead! 🦍 Yeep! It was awesome, they're so nice over there and it's fun work!). I was really excited about this workshop though bc I love to support local shops and businesses, and Handzy makes the cutest, most adorable greeting cards! Plus they're on my side of the river :) Maybe next year!
All in all, a great Design Week...did any of you go to any of the events? Give me the download if so! Super curious about the ones I couldn't make it to!
