The Sounds of Summer: Designing for Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra
May 12, 2017
One of my FAVE nonprofits in Cincy is the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra (CCO). They were one of my very first clients when I went full-time freelance, and they really believed in me and even set me up on retainer so I'd have a steady paycheck. We have a great relationship; to me, they are more than clients, they're friends that I care deeply about.
We've worked on SO many projects together over the last few years—event branding, print materials, promotionals, signage, even CCO's e-blast was designed by MANMAN. I love working with them because they bring me in on the ground level, value my opinion (on more than just design) and TRUST me to lead them in the right direction with their brand...plus they are very respectful, professional and appreciative in our interactions.
Just check out this super-sweet quote from LeAnne Anklan, the general manager of CCO: "Mandy's creativity, kindness and design prowess have been crucial to our renewed presence in the Greater Cincinnati arts community. Because of her rebrand, we were able to capitalize on our 40 years of history while transforming the CCO and creating a fresh path forward. Without a doubt, she has helped to drive an increase in ticket revenue and bring in new patrons for our organization. I have lost count of the number of audience members and supporters who have gushed over her work." *blushing*
One of my favorite projects with CCO has been (and still is) is the Summermusik Festival they started 3 years ago. We've worked on naming, branding, identity systems and all marketing communications together—there's something new every year.
The Summermusik Festival is a unique month-long festival that brings chamber orchestra to people and places that might not normally experience it, including "Chamber Crawls"in bars (likeMadTreeandThe Sanctuary) and "A Little Afternoon Musik" in unexpected places (like Drake Planetarium and Hotel Covington). This year includes music by David Bowie, Walk the Moon, as well as classical favorites like Mozart and Beethoven. There's also a bagpiper in full regalia, a mash-up with MamLuft&Co dancers, and a puppet show by Madcap Puppets! CCO is always striving to break norms with Summermusik, so I am really excited to see where they take it in the future!
I can't show the work we've done for this season (the festival isn't till August) but last season is fair game! Check some of it out below to get a sense of the design aesthetic and vibe we're striving for. Lmk if you plan to go to any events, I might see you there!
Some special events during Summermusik get their own unique look and feel, which is really fun for a designer!
