Recently, I was doing some image searching for a design project and stumbled upon a photoshoot of this woman. At first glance, I could NOT believe all of the images were of the same person! Depending on her pose, hairstyle, clothing, etc., and the lighting and background, her age seems to vary. These photos show how important these elements are and how you can influence your photos to make yourself look your best!
In countless shoots with women over the years, I've noticed that leaving your hair down often makes you look younger. In the photo on the left, the softer light and youthful pose (slight shoulder twist and face angled up toward the camera) also helps. Her denim jacket with a fun polka-dot shirt underneath gives her skin more color vs the white that is washing her out on the right.
In these two examples, the color schemes are the same (her clothing and the background) but in the right image, she looks a lot younger. This is because her hair is styled in a way that is more on-trend (sleeker vs lots of volume) and she's wearing hot pink lipstick, which creates youthful vibrancy. She’s also photographed from slightly above, which makes her eyes appear bigger. And her pose feels very natural and has more energy.
These three images are all good examples of extra things you can do to appear younger!
Use bright colors, whether it's the background, your clothing or your lipstick. This will make the photo more vibrant, refresh your skin color and highlight your favorite features, like your eyes, your smile, etc. Make sure you keep your colors on-trend or they can make your photo look dated.
Having fun with your photos also makes you look younger!! Notice how she’s playfully looking up in one, being silly while drinking OJ in another and leaning on her arm in the other—all of these show her playful, youthful personality.
In conclusion...if you want to look younger in your photos:
Have fun with your shoot! Your attitude going in is the BIGGEST factor in getting great shots. If you’re stressed, your photos are going to feel more posed. If you can relax and have fun, your photographer will be able to capture your naturally beautiful moments!
Be playful with your posing!! Flirt with that camera!
Try to incorporate at least some things that are on-trend (hair, makeup, clothing, backgrounds).
Incorporate bright colors and/or fun patterns into your wardrobe when you can (neutrals are beautiful too, but it never hurts to bring some color options!).
Try some funky backgrounds! Whether it’s a bright color or a crazy pattern, backgrounds make a huge difference in setting the tone of the photo!
Have your photographer shoot mostly from above and tilt your face upward (not just your eyes). This makes your eyes look larger and elongates your neck. You don't need to do this in EVERY shot, but get a few at least!
Wear your hair down if you want to look your youngest, or at least try different options with your hair. You can see how big of a difference it makes in these photos!
